Blogging in large undergraduate courses:
Promoting conceptual change in Nutrition 100

Dr. Trena Paulus

Assistant Professor, Educational Psychology & Counseling
Dr. Marsha Spence
Research Assistant Professor, Department of Nutrition

Previous research has shown that taking into account students’ prior knowledge, using active learning strategies, and providing feedback are all important to promote learning/conceptual change in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math). Lectures are limited in their ability to provide such opportunities. Learn how integrating blogs into a large undergraduate course can make students’ prior knowledge visible and provide an opportunity for facilitating conceptual change.

Leveraging Second Life to Create a Technology-Assisted Constructivist Language Environment for Spanish 111/112

Dr. Dolly Young

Professor, Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures
Doug Canfield
Coordinator, Language Resource Center, Modern Foreign Languages
and Literatures

Today’s students are socialized in ways that are radically different from previous generations (Prensky 2001). They require learning environments that allow greater personal latitude in constructing knowledge of a target language and culture. Come hear how Second Life was used to create a language learning environment for Spanish 111/112 and the implications of this pilot study for future implementation. Second Life is an Internet-based virtual reality environment where participants interact with each other through avatars.

Dr. Wanda Costen discussed her Project RITE grant which incorporates posting videotaped lecture sessions on relevant exam topics. She provides 5-15 minute videos of each topic that she expects to be on the exam. Her students sign up for the experience and then she tracks their usage to determine whether there is a difference in the exam performance of the students who review the videos. She also conducts face-to-face interviews to get more in-depth information about their experience with the videotaped sessions and why they choose to use them. The students access the documents via Blackboard.

Dr. Jeffrey Davis presented the outcomes of a highly collaborative Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) project, which was endorsed by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and supported by a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship (2006 – 2007). One of the major outcomes of this project, made possible with the assistance of ITC and START, is the development of a digital corpus of Native American sign language documentary materials. The development of this digital archive was carried out in close collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution. We will share our experiences with various institutions, and with multimedia tools and IT resources. The chief objective is to make archival materials and language corpora more accessible to broader audiences—scholars, students, and community members.

Dr. Jenn Fishman believes that today, both in and outside the university, writing is a multimodal, multimedia activity that involves not only pen and paper or keyboard and screen, but also lights, cameras, and all the complexities of recording live action. In some sections of English 355: Writing and Rhetoric, students now have the opportunity to research and create digital video documentaries. In this presentation, Dr. Jenn Fishman will talk about her rationale for the course, as well as course logistics; and students Jess Irwin and John Nelson will discuss their class projects, highlighting the lessons in rhetoric and writing they learned through digital video composing.

ITC Faculty Share Session: Podcasting and Teaching with iPods

Dr. McConville
Watch Dr. McConville's
4/9/08 Faculty Share Session
Dr. Brendan McConville, Lecturer of Music Theory and Ph.D. recipient at Rutgers University, shared his experiences in podcasting and teaching with iPods. He feels that the positive attributes of “podcasting” make it one of the most sensible methods for utilizing new technology in education. This increasingly popular format offers the benefits of portability, flexibility and affordability to both teachers and students. Dr. McConville discussed types of podcasts and methods for construction and also considered additional ways in which the iPod may be used as a teaching tool.

Dr. A. J. Baker, Director of the UT Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering, presented his solutions to the following questions: ever wish you could be two places at once? Cover more material in a lecture? Have more time for research? Dr. Baker discussed his development and use of online course delivery to overcome these obstacles and enhance the student learning experience.

Dr. Janet Kelly has recently begun supplementing her public financial management class with asynchronous content created using the collaboration tool LiveOnline@UT, powered by Saba Centra software. Using voice-over PowerPoint with other media, Dr. Kelly typically develops short (10-15 minute), topic-specific sessions that students can download and reveiw in preparation for class. With LiveOnline@UT, Dr. Kelly can prepare and record content when she is at her best, and her students can access it when they are ready to learn. This convenience also allows them to spend more class time on activities like case discussion or problem analysis.

Dr. Bob Augé employs the use of multiple teaching and learning technologies in his Plant Sciences 448: Horticultural Internet Technology course. He uses Online@UT to manage most of his student assignments. Students submit their assignments in digital format. He is then able to view, download, grade, and provide feedback to students all within Online@UT. Dr. Augé also uses Adobe Captivate to record and post lecture material and demonstrations, so students have 24/7 access to the learning materials.
