Teaching with Technology

In March 2000, The Innovative Technology Center implemented the Teaching With Technology (TWT) grant program by awarding grants to 40 faculty members representing 25 departments. Each grantee was provided a choice of either laptop computer or a digital camera and a $2000 one-time salary supplement to develop an interdisciplinary instructional module for delivery via the World Wide Web.

In 2002, the focus of the Teaching With Technology grant program was successfully shifted from individual faculty members to departmental faculty teams. From 2001-2005, more than 75 faculty members have participated in the Teaching With Technology grant program, resulting in the development of approximately 100 instructional modules for delivery via the World Wide Web.

Wireless Instructional Initiatives

Wireless computing and mobile learning continue to evolve as powerful tools to enhance communication, collaboration, and information management. As the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, enters its fifth year of hosting a pervasive academic wireless network, the ITC continues to collaborate with faculty to investigate best practices for teaching and learning, establish innovative teaching practices, and explore research possibilities. Over the past 5 years, the ITC has partnered with faculty from 21 departments in 4 colleges to exploit the existing UT wireless network and incorporate relevant educational technologies.

Participants in the WII project integrate wireless technology in their course for a minimum of one quarter of the semester, participate in a summer institute that incorporates pedagogical consultation with individualized training, submit status reports to the ITC WII implementation team and the other WII participants, conduct pre- and post-course student assessments, and submit a final report.

Previous projects have incorporated equipment ranging from wireless laptops, PDAs, and Tablet PCs to digital cameras and GPS units. Specific activities from the past few years have begun to shift from a classroom-based, individual model to ones more group and field based, such as capturing real-world data (pictures, coordinates, prices, etc.) and relaying or storing it for later analysis amongst team members.

Instructional Gaming Video Seminars

Sponsored by ITC and Sunsite, this series of five video seminars looked at the possibilites of integrating instructional gaming technologies in the classroom.

National Alumni Association/CUE/ITC Grant

Recipients of this grant received up to $500 for support of innovative technological activities that serve to improve teaching and learning.

ITC/CUE/Hewlett Innovative Teaching Fellowships

The ITC/CUE Hewlett Innovative Teaching Fellowships was a two-year (1998-1999) grant that supported interdisciplinary courses which combine elements from two or more areas of study that inherently emphasize synergy and problem solving in the classroom.

PEW Grant Award

In 1999, ITC, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (MFLL), and Center for Undergraduate Excellence (CUE) were awarded $200,000. The purpose of this institutional grant program is to encourage colleges and universities to redesign their instructional approaches using technology to achieve cost savings as well as quality enhancements.
